Eco-Friendly Burial | “I Have a Date with the Sea”: Lanxi Holds a Collective Sea-Burial Ceremony, Returning the Souls of 20 Deceased to the Ocean

Abstract
In 2016, Lanxi issued the “Measures on Implementing Fee Reductions, Exemptions, and Incentives for Ecological Burial,” strengthening financial incentives for eco‑friendly burial practices and further promoting space‑saving, environmentally sustainable methods of interment. The regulations stipulate that any funeral arrangement that minimizes or eliminates land use—such as tree burial, flower burial, lawn burial, scattering ashes, or scattering ashes at sea—is eligible for corresponding rewards and subsidies. Specifically, residents who opt for ash scattering or sea scattering not only receive a waiver of the direct costs associated with these practices but also an additional reward of 6,000 yuan per case. Meanwhile, those choosing tree burial, flower burial, or lawn burial are exempt from burial fees and receive an extra reward of 3,000 yuan per case.
At 7:00 a.m. on December 2, a collective sea‑burial ceremony titled “A Date with the Sea” was held at the Lanxi City Funeral Home, co‑organized by the Lanxi Municipal Civilization Office and the Lanxi Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau. Attending the ceremony were Wang Bin, Director of the Lanxi Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau; Zhu Liqi, Deputy Director of the Lanxi Municipal Publicity Department; Chen Hanbing, Deputy Director of the Lanxi Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau; as well as leading officials in charge from townships and subdistricts and civil affairs assistants.
This is the largest single sea‑burial event to date since Lanxi first launched its sea‑burial program, with the highest number of participants.
A family representative delivered a heartfelt address, stating that interring the ashes at sea fulfilled their grandfather’s lifelong wish.
Following the farewell ceremony, 20 bereaved families boarded buses in an orderly manner, as arranged by the organizers, and headed to the Lianhuayang waters off Zhoushan.
As the ship reached the designated waters, accompanied by flowers and music, the biodegradable urn containing the ashes of the deceased was gently lowered into the sea. The steady sound of the ship’s horn conveyed the loved ones’ heartfelt wishes, hoping that the departed would rest in peace on their journey.
Since 2014, Lanxi has carried out a total of 66 sea burials. To honor those who have been laid to rest at sea, the Lanxi Municipal Funeral Home has erected a Sea Burial Memorial Monument at Xiangyang Cemetery, inscribing the names of the deceased on it so that their families may express their grief and pay tribute to their loved ones.
