In recent years, Europeans have gained a new option for interment: France has recently opened its first forest cemetery designed to accommodate biodegradable urns. Located in a small village at the foot of the southern Pyrenees, the site offers individual plots as well as pre‑reserved family spaces. According to reports, the woodland—known as “Fontaine de l’Ours”—lies in the tiny village of Arbas, just a few dozen kilometers south of Toulouse. Covering roughly one hectare and home to more than 40 trees, it can hold up to 216 urns. Those opting for tree burial may choose from various species, such as beech or cedar; after cremation, the ashes are placed in a biodegradable container.

According to reports, this woodland, known as “Fontaine de l'Ours” (Bear’s Spring), is located in the small village of Arbas, several dozen kilometers south of Toulouse. Covering roughly one hectare, it contains more than 40 trees and can accommodate approximately 216 urns.
Those who wish to be buried beneath a tree may choose from various species, such as zelkova or cedar. After cremation, the ashes will be placed in a biodegradable wooden or fibrous urn and interred at the base of the tree.
According to reports, France lagged behind Germany in this area. Environmental law scholar Conteduvit began exploring the feasibility of tree burials several years ago, obtained a license to operate in the funeral industry, and subsequently established a tree-burial company.
Albas has only about 250 residents, and after hearing Duweit’s vision, they quickly agreed to collaborate. Village chief Savyak said that although she was initially somewhat hesitant, she was soon convinced—and even reserved several tree‑burial plots for her own family.
Saviac said that, to bring this plan to fruition, they collaborated throughout the process with France’s National Hunting and Wildlife Agency—well-versed in the forest—and local hunters. “This is not a cemetery; it’s designed for those who wish to connect with nature.”
According to reports, this forest tree‑burial program was launched in May this year, and many people are eager to reserve a spot. A single‑person plot costs 175 euros (approximately 1,367 yuan), while family plots top out at 1,000 euros.
